Bill the Hours You Actually Worked: Practice Management and AI Tools for Solo Attorneys

A solo attorney is the lawyer, the bookkeeper, the intake desk, and the collections department. The work that slips first is rarely the legal work. It is the six-minute increments nobody recorded, the trust account that needs reconciling, and the invoice that went out three weeks late.

Practice management software fixes most of that. The newer pitch is AI: drafting help, document summaries, and case assistants. In every platform we looked at, the AI sits on a higher tier than the base plan, so the price you see first is rarely the price you pay for the AI. We also found that most published “best of” rankings in this space are written by vendors or affiliate sites, so treat every list, including this one, as a starting point. Confirm current pricing on each vendor’s site before you commit.

The best practice management tools for solo attorneys

Clio: the default choice, with AI on the top tier

Clio is the platform most solo attorneys trial first, and its integration list is the longest in the category. Third-party pricing trackers list four tiers per user: EasyStart at about $49 per month ($39 billed annually), Essentials at about $89 ($79), Advanced at about $119 ($109), and Complete at about $149 ($139). Those trackers report that AI drafting and the Clio Grow intake CRM require the Complete tier.

Best for: attorneys who want the broadest set of integrations and expect to grow past solo. Watch out for: reviewers report billing friction around license renewals, so remove unused licenses before your renewal date rather than just deactivating them.

MyCase: the clearest AI-by-tier breakdown

MyCase lists three plans per user per month: Basic at $60 ($50 billed annually), Pro at $120 ($100), and Advanced at $150 ($130). The AI tools, branded 8am IQ, start on Pro with a writing and document assistant. Advanced adds a case assistant and a discovery assistant that reads case documents, with a monthly page allowance per user. MyCase offers a full-access free trial with no credit card required.

Best for: attorneys who want built-in AI drafting and a client portal without stitching tools together. Watch out for: Basic has no AI, so budget for Pro if that is why you are switching.

PracticePanther: the lowest-cost per-user entry point

PracticePanther lists four per-user plans: Solo at $49, Essential at $69, Business at $89, and Business Pro at $114 per month. It covers time tracking, billing, matters, and a client portal, and offers a free trial with no credit card required.

Best for: a solo practice that needs clean time-to-invoice workflows and wants to keep monthly software spend low.

CosmoLex: practice management with legal accounting built in

CosmoLex pairs practice management with built-in trust and business accounting, so you do not need a separate QuickBooks subscription to keep IOLTA records straight. Third-party listings put it at about $89 per user per month.

Best for: attorneys who handle client funds regularly and want trust accounting in the same system as billing.

LawPay: getting paid without trust-account headaches

LawPay is not a practice management system. It is a payment processor built for law firms, designed to keep earned and unearned funds separated so card fees do not come out of your trust account. It integrates with most of the platforms above. Third-party listings describe pricing as a monthly fee plus a per-transaction percentage, so get a quote that matches your volume.

Best for: any solo attorney who takes retainers by card.

A note on using AI in legal work

The ABA’s Formal Opinion 512 (2024) addresses lawyers’ use of generative AI, including competence, confidentiality, and billing. In practice, that means reviewing every AI draft before it leaves your office, checking a vendor’s data handling before you upload client files, and being careful about how AI time shows up on an invoice. Your state bar may have its own guidance too. For contract templates and agreements outside your practice software, our guide to AI PDF tools covers summarizing and searching long documents.

Which one should you choose?

  • Want AI drafting in the same tool you bill from: MyCase Pro, or Clio Complete if you need Clio’s integrations.
  • Keeping costs lowest: PracticePanther Solo or Clio EasyStart billed annually.
  • Handle a lot of client funds: CosmoLex, or any platform paired with LawPay.

Practice management tools for attorneys share a lot with what solo clinicians use. If you are curious how another regulated profession handles notes and billing, our guide to AI tools for solo therapists covers the same trade-offs.

Many solo attorneys build referral business with a simple monthly client newsletter. Beehiiv is an easy way to start one, and it is what we use for The Solo Stack, our weekly roundup of tools for one-person businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Is Clio worth it for a solo attorney?

For many, yes, especially if you rely on integrations. But if AI drafting is the reason you are buying, check which tier includes it, because third-party trackers report it requires the top Complete plan.

Which legal practice management software includes AI on a mid-tier plan?

MyCase lists its writing and document assistant on the Pro plan, below its top tier.

Do I need separate accounting software?

Not with CosmoLex, which includes trust and business accounting. Most other platforms integrate with QuickBooks or similar tools instead.

Can I use ChatGPT or Claude for legal drafting?

You can, but review every output, avoid uploading confidential client information unless you have checked the provider’s data terms, and follow ABA Formal Opinion 512 and your state bar’s guidance.

Are there free trials?

MyCase and PracticePanther both list free trials that do not require a credit card. Clio’s trial length varies by source, so confirm on its site.
